According to the Chinese Consulate General in Auckland, on the morning of June 28, a 16-year-old Chinese student boarded a bus in Auckland city and was hit with a metal rod-like object by a woman, sustaining "serious injuries." The Consulate General stated, "We are deeply shocked and saddened by the incident," and while extending condolences to the student's family, it urged local police to conduct a full investigation.

Hu Xijin, a journalist and former editor-in-chief of the Global Times, affiliated with the Communist Party of China, on July 1 cited this incident and an incident in the Philippines where Chinese business owners were kidnapped and later killed, stating, "The risks Chinese people encounter abroad are far greater than the risks foreigners face in China." He reported that in the New Zealand incident, only an elderly Chinese man protected the student, and the student pleaded for the door not to be opened, but the driver opened it anyway, allowing the perpetrator to escape.

Hu claimed, "This incident clearly has the nature of hate. There were more than 10 people on the bus, and they could have easily subdued the perpetrator and handed them over to the police, but they didn't. Allowing the criminal to escape reflects the community's weak stance against hate crimes, and it is a shame for civil society."

He then referred to the attack on a Japanese mother and child that occurred in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, on June 24, stating, "In the Suzhou incident, Chinese school bus staff member Hu Youping bravely protected the Japanese woman and children. And other passersby quickly helped, subduing the perpetrator on the spot." He also mentioned that in the attack on American university faculty members in Jilin Province, Chinese people protected the victims and were injured, stating, "Every society has crazy criminals, and unfortunately, foreigners sometimes become targets of attacks, but Chinese society's attitude against crime and its stance to help attacked foreigners is clear and resolute."

He further emphasized, "In the Suzhou attack, Hu Youping is the true representative of Chinese society, not the perpetrator." He argued, "To describe Hu Youping in praise with phrases like 'a savior for such a country' or 'protected the last humanity of Chinese people' is actually an insult to Chinese society and should be firmly opposed."
